Laredo ISD Lands Best of the Bunch Award

Laredo ISD Lands Best of the Bunch Award from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Laredo ISD’s Child Nutrition Program is among the Best of the Bunch, according to the Texas Department of Agriculture.

TDA recently honored the Laredo Independent School District Child Nutrition Department with the Best of the Bunch Award for its participation in the Local Products 2019 Summer Farm Fresh Challenge.

The 2019 Summer Farm Fresh Challenge is a fun and engaging way for nutrition professionals to gain recognition for efforts to bring local foods and agricultural learning activities to the district.

The department was recognized for successfully incorporating local ingredients and produce in at least three meal components. CNP was further recognized for the numerous nutrition education events and programs that are being offered at Laredo ISD campuses.

“By serving Texas agricultural projects as part of school meals and offering students an opportunity to learn about agriculture and locally grown food, the nutrition professionals in your district have taken the extra steps necessary to introduce students to local food and help them make smart nutritional choices,” said TDA Commissioner Sid Miller in a letter to the district.

The CNP was recognized specifically for providing lifelong lessons about good nutrition and engaging community partners in making it a mission to serve healthy, balanced local meals and snacks for the Summer Meal Program.

“Summer meals are critical in the lives of thousands of Laredo’s youth, who may not have access to nutritious meals when meals are not available. LISD provides every opportunity to serve the children of our community offering meals throughout the summer at all LISD campuses and expanding to local community centers, shelters, and local Boys& Girls Clubs,” said LISD CNP Director Robert Cuellar.

The planning for the summer feeding program began early during the school year when students serving in the Elementary and Secondary Menu Advisory Committees were on site and contributing to the selection of warm food options for the summer feeding program.

LISD CNP leads the nation in innovative ways to engage students in healthy eating and also incorporates many opportunities to provide nutritious options and selections for the 24,000 students it serves daily.

During the summer months, the LISD Summer Feeding Program served 40,495 breakfasts, 64,456 lunches, and 10, 375 snacks.
