LISD offers Parental Skills and Development Courses

El Tiempo Vuela, El Vicks, Curitas de Amor, and La Plancha aren’t typical courses offered at Laredo Independent School, nor are the students taking these classes. LISD’s Parent and Family Engagement Program is providing a unique opportunity to the district’s parents to participate in free Parental Skills and Development courses beginning Thursday, August 29, at various campuses throughout the district.

Carlos Rene Ramirez, LISD Lead Parent Liaison, who facilitated and authored the curriculum conducts the classes. With over 24 years of parental involvement experience at LISD, Ramirez created the curriculum through extensive research and experience itself.

According to Ramirez, the average class size of about 22 parents is the perfect setting for these types of classes. “The classes really inspire a tremendous confidence and people help each other out and collaborate sharing similar experience,” said Ramirez.  “One of the important aspects that occurs in each class is the contributing of ideas within each other. They open up with real deep personal issues they are going through. Somehow, they feel the confidence to be able to share that within the class.  It often becomes a healing session. We certainly welcome this opportunity for all the participants.”

Each course has its own special dynamic and target. For example, the “El Vicks” class provides families with a way to discover our culture experience in healing and developing better and effective ways to lead our families towards a better education.

“These courses are a life changer! I have had wonderful stories of parents stopping me around and thanking me. They often share their experiences of how they have implemented the techniques and ideas learned with their families and home,” Ramirez said. “I tell them it’s not me. I’m sorry. It’s you. You discovered it. You are the ones that did it. That is my purpose to be able to help them discover that.”

LISD is providing these classes in Spanish and at no cost to parents, guardians, and families. Every class offers childcare. The district has parent liaisons at each campus all funded through LISD’s Parent and Family Engagement Program.
