“Trust is the essence of leadership.” – Colin Powell

Good afternoon LISD,

The Laredo ISD Board of Trustees was recognized during a dinner organized by PILLAR and sponsored by La Posada and the Prairie Foundation on Wednesday night. PILLAR highlighted all the policies and measures adopted by both LISD and UISD Board members to combat bullying in our classrooms. We are glad that the community honors and recognizes the efforts of these selfless individuals who give up so much of their time for the youth of our city. Best of all, our students were highlighted during the event. Carlos Ricardo Ramirez of Cigarroa High School, and Marco Pena and Anthony Martinez of Garcia Early College High School amazed everyone with their Spoken Word Poetry performances. After awards were presented, the Martin High School Mariachi Tigres del Sur, under the direction of Bobby Castro, serenaded the audience.

The United States Border Patrol Laredo Sector honored four compassionate and industrious LISD students as "Youth of the Month" for March. These students have collectively contributed 1,000 volunteer hours to their community all while maintaining high grade point averages.  Congratulations to Angela Chaires of Cigarroa High School, Jesus Sebastian Salazar of Garcia High School, Raquel Reyes of Nixon High School, and Abril Escamilla of Martin High School. These young leaders are excellent role models for their peers.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Explorer Post 2304 also recognized Cigarroa High School Junior Daniel Lozano with the LAW (Leadership and Wisdom Enforcement) Award during a ceremony at the school’s gym on Tuesday morning. Daniel currently serves as a member of the Laredo Police Department Explorer Post. He is a member of the CHS SkillsUSA Law Enforcement - Building Search Team that recently won the district competition and advanced to the state competition in April. The LAW award is a monthly merit-based award that recognizes local youth leaders who are enrolled in their school’s Criminal Justice Program and demonstrate good judgment, justice, initiative-driven leadership skills, academic work, and community involvement. Thank you to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and their sponsors, Falcon International Bank, Wayback Burgers, Sweet Spot, and Big Bob’s Trophies for recognizing our outstanding students.

This morning Cigarroa High School inducted new members into their Toro Legends during a ceremony held in the school’s gym. Toro Legends were recognized for their career accomplishments and community involvement. The recipients also provided inspiring messages to the CHS Class of 2017. The recipients were presented with a plaque by school Principal Laura Flores. This year’s inductees include Christine Verduzco, Juan Saldana, Jr., Dr. Jose Angel Ramirez, Clemente Camarillo, Dr. Maria De Lourdes Viloria, Marie Josephine Granados, Samuel Salazar, Irene Salinas-Delacqueseaux, and Jesse Gonzalez.

LISD welcomed visitors from La Joya ISD this morning who came to learn more about our Early Literacy Program at Dovalina and Macdonell Elementary Schools.  The Early Literacy Program is a partnership LISD is fortunate to have with TAMIU’s School of Education.  The doors to our schools are always open to representatives from other school districts.  This is one way we share best practices with each other.

Best wishes to our top spellers as they compete in the annual city-wide Spelling Bee on Saturday morning. These youngsters have learned how to spell more than 1,150 words. I laud these bright kids and their spelling coaches for their perseverance. The bee is sponsored by The Laredo Morning Times and Literacy Volunteers of America Laredo Chapter. The competition starts promptly at 9:00 a.m., at TAMIU’s Student Center.

Enjoy your weekend.
