March cover

March 8, 2019

Dear Colleagues,

LISD students and staff have been working very hard all year long, and it’s time for a well-deserved Spring Break. This holiday is not just for students to enjoy.  The daily rigors of our job takes its toll on our minds and bodies. Therefore, I invite you take a step back from your post and recharge your brain and recover your energy.

Before you leave for some much needed rest and relaxation, here are a few of the recent highlights that have made our Spring Semester truly memorable:

The Vidal M. Trevino School of Communications and Fine Arts was the recipient of the highly coveted Texas Medal of Arts presented by the Texas Cultural Trust. Several faculty members and students traveled to Austin to accept the award and to catch a glimpse of fellow Medal of Arts winner Matthew McConaughey.

Cigarroa High School students, Andres Gutierrez and Antonio Portos, won the U.S. Congressional App for designing the game, Ode to Stars App as a way to entertain young audiences and develop their programming skills. Their game will be featured on the Congressional App Challenge website and on display in the U.S. Capitol.

The Martin and Nixon High School Boys Varsity Basketball Teams had an exciting season.  The Martin Tigers were crowned 29-5A District Champs, while the Nixon Mustangs took the District 30-6A Runner Up honors.  Nixon went on to win the Regional Semifinals and made it to the Elite Eight. We are also proud of our Nixon Lady Mustangs who earned were District Runner Up accolades.

As the Grand Champion of the LISD Science Fair, Cigarroa High School student Esther Morales will be traveling to Phoenix, Arizona to participate in the INTEL International Science Fair.

The Cigarroa High School Mariachi Azteca directed by Servando Serna won a First Division Rating at the State UIL meet.  Que viva el mariachi y todos los estudiantes de LISD!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all of your hard work in and out of our classrooms.  With that being said, let’s not forget to recognize the excellent leadership and wonderful contributions that our LISD ladies have made towards the success of our students and their peers as we celebrate Women’s International Day.  Your dedication and efforts are a constant source of inspiration to all of us. We are truly building tomorrow together, one child at a time.

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour on Sunday as we are moving into Central Daylight Saving Time. Have fun, be safe, and enjoy your family during Spring Break!  We will see you back at LISD, on Monday, March 18, 2019, ready to continue preparing our students for academic success.

Best always,

Dr. Sylvia G. Rios
