“Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values.” – Thomas Monson

Good afternoon LISD,

These last few days have been filled with festive holiday concerts, gifts for our boys and girls from numerous generous souls, and kind wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy new year. I have thoroughly enjoyed every performance and invitation and reflect upon the many talented students and staff that truly exemplify the educational commitment of LISD and the spirit of Christmas!

I would like to express my gratitude to all the individuals and organizations who contributed gift-wrapped toys and winter apparel for our children. For example, our Board of Trustees President Hector Garcia gave new bicycles to 125 kids at D.D. Hachar Elementary School.

The employees at International Bank of Commerce treated our little ones to lunch, a photo with Santa Claus, toys, and coats. The City of Laredo Police Department took Ryan Elementary School students on a shopping spree at Target. The kids spent the new few hours buying gifts for their parents and siblings. There so many examples of generosity and compassion shown to our students. The South Texas Afghanistan Iraq Veterans Association gave kids at Leyendecker Elementary School shoes through “Operation Warm Feet, Happy Feet.” From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank all of our holiday donors for their kind heartedness.

The best gift we can give our students is a quality education, the attention they deserve, and goals which benefit our children. As you may already know, it’s not enough for our kids to pass the STAAR exam. Under the new accountability system, our elementary and middle school children should master their content area, and high school students should demonstrate college, career or military readiness. Together, with you, we can multiply the many opportunities and blessings to which our students are entitled. None of this will be possible without our careful planning, diligent work, and specific targets.

With this being said, we send you our most heartfelt best wishes to you and your loved ones during the holiday season. I hope you enjoy your Christmas break and can reflect on the past school year and re-energize for the second half of the race. Thank you for all that you contribute to Laredo ISD.
We’ll see you back at LISD on Monday, January 8, 2018.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Best always,
Dr. Sylvia G. Rios
Laredo ISD Superintendent of Schools

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” – Calvin Coolidge
